2023 Delegation to Queensland, Australia
In February 2023, a delegation of Mongolian emergency medical personnel from various agencies participated in an EMS Global-led study tour of EMS, fire and rescue, aeromedical and disaster management in South East Queensland, supported by Griffith University.
Led by Dr Suvd Nergui, the delegation spent time observing the emergency and training departments at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. Their visit, included a respectful welcome to country from a representative of Australia's First Nations community.
EMS Global is building an international network of opportunities for our Mongolian colleagues and these study tours are a way of making positive and productive connections.
The delegation was welcomed on arrival in Australia by Griffith University officials. The university supported the delegation throughout their visit. The university has hosted the project since 2017.
The Mongolian delegates were welcomed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) where they had a tour of the emergency department (ED), and the clinical simulation training facility.
The delegation then visited the disaster operations centre with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach.
The team had an opportunity to check out a Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) ambulance.
Two Mongolian delegates (Dr. Khosoo and Dr. Khongor) participated in a QFES road crash rescue exercise with heavy rescue based at Chermside, Brisbane.
The Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Medical Director, Dr. Khongor, made a thank-you presentation to the QAS Medical Director, Dr. Steve Rashford.
The delegation was keen to visit a rural EMS setting. Stanthorpe QAS, close to the NSW border hosted the delegation. Interesting discussions centred around ambulance crewing, remote responses and cross-border cooperation when Queensland covered close by locations in NSW when their local crews were not available or needed additional resources.
For NEMA EMS chief Dr Khongor the Stanthorpe visit proved to be an on-road experience when he was simulating "treating" a patient inside a QAS ambulance. Delegation leader Dr. Suvd Nergui had the opportunity to test drive the Stryker powered stretcher. The crews at Stanthorpe were delighted to receive gifts from the delegation to thank them for such a comprehensive and informative visit.
LifeFlight Aeromedical in Brisbane extended a warm welcome to delegates. The visit to Lifeflight was featured in a TV news story on Mongolian National Broadcasting (MNB) network.
It cannot be all work and no play!
The Mongolian delegation enjoyed a day at the beach on Stradbroke Island.
The stunning sea views, and beach swim, enthralled the delegates from a land-locked country.
